My First Booklet – God’s Attributes: Rest for Life’s Struggles

I am excited to announce the near release of my first publication: God’s Attributes: Rest for Life’s Struggles.

The Back Story: I came home from church discouraged after hearing a great sermon. Sounds awkward, I know, but it felt even more awkward. I knew I shouldn’t feel that way. Hearing a clear presentation of who God is should have either brought conviction or motivation. But in this case, I was just discouraged.

That led to some soul searching. I realized I was feeling pressure. I didn’t want to know “one more thing” about God that I couldn’t do when I was still working on emulating what I did know. As I put this into words, I realized I needed to think differently about how I related to God.

That led to the first major insight of this booklet:

I should seek to rest in any attribute of God (i.e., find comfort, trust, or security) before I try to emulate that attribute. Resting in God is what makes imitation a sustainable life of worship rather than a driven life of performance.

I had quit resting in God’s character. God was my benchmark more than He was my refuge. As this changed, I noticed how the Psalms–which frequently celebrate God as our rock, refuge, hiding place, etc. — came alive to me in fresh ways.

C.S. Lewis on Jesus’ Full Temptation

A Counselor Reflects on Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

“That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because He was the only man who never yielded to temptation, is also the only man who knows to the full what temptation means—the only complete realist (p. 142).” Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

For a long time I didn’t have a good answer to those who asked (some sincerely; some cynically), “Wasn’t Jesus’ temptation easier because He was God?” I could take the conversation one step by replying, “Jesus faced His temptation with his full humanity. So just like he submitted to hunger, thirst, and sleep as a human, Jesus also submitted to the full force of temptation.”

Prayer and Talking to My Children

Have you a conversation with a child lately? It’s great. There is passion over the oddest things. Strange phrases get strung together in precious ways. Subjects change on a whim. If you will take the time to listen, it is a great escape into another world.

Recently as I have had conversations with my children, I have tried to reflect on God listening to me in prayer. While I know I can’t be as cute, it has been a fruitful area of reflection.

At first I had to guard against using this perspective to trivialize my concerns. Protecting myself from viewing my prayers this way actually helped me become a better listener for my children. I realized I was asking God, who is infinitely greater than I am, to show concern to my troubles, which are minute compared to Him.

STEP 1
PREPARE yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually to face your suffering.

“I heard Gary come in, and I heard the boys greet their father. Normal sounds. But this wasn’t a normal household. Nothing was normal anymore. I wasn’t normal. All I could do was cry and ask questions. I was obsessed. Everyone would be fine if I could just move on. They could all just live their normal little lives with all the other normal people (p. 41)… Nothing surprised me anymore. Except me—I surprised me all the time (p. 177).” Gary & Mona Shriver in Unfaithful

C.S. Lewis on Sin’s Current

A Counselor Reflects on Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

“No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down (p. 142).” Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

The “silly idea” to which Lewis alludes is till “current.” It seems to be alive in two ways. First, those with life-dominating sin struggles still view those who “have it together” as being blissfully naïve. Second, those who are facing intense temptation by walking against sins’ tide fear they are doing something wrong because life is so hard.

This lie cuts off both people groups from a vital source of their hope.

The first group views anyone who is living a seemingly healthy life as being “out of touch” with their reality. “You can’t understand,” is the refrain that rings in their mind when they consider talking to someone who is skilled in the areas where they are weak.
